Dahua PTZ Panoramic Linkage: Calibrate and Track 2026

TL;DR

  • Panoramic linkage lets a panoramic camera act as the main camera and hand a detected target to a detail (PTZ) camera, which moves to the corresponding position and tracks it.
  • You must complete main/sub calibration first; without it the detail camera has no mapping between panorama coordinates and its own pan/tilt/zoom position.
  • Linkage Track and Relay Tracking behave differently when a target leaves the panorama frame — choose deliberately, and set idle position so the PTZ returns predictably.

What this solves

A single fixed panoramic camera gives wide coverage but limited detail. A single PTZ gives detail but only where it happens to be pointed. Panoramic linkage combines them: the panoramic camera watches the whole scene, and when its smart rules trigger an alarm, the detail camera automatically links to the corresponding position and tracks the object until it leaves the detection range or the tracking time expires (manual page 233).

For integrators, this matters because it converts a wide-area detection problem into a detail-verification problem without a human operator driving the PTZ. The panorama provides context and target acquisition; the PTZ provides the close-up that operators and recording review actually need.

Two configuration blocks make it work: main/sub calibration (the geometric mapping between the two cameras) and linkage track (the behaviour after a trigger). Both live under the panoramic linkage area of the Web 5.0 interface. The exact layout of surrounding menus can vary, so treat the paths below as the documented baseline and confirm against your firmware.

How the workflow works

The sequence is straightforward once calibration exists. The panoramic camera runs its smart rules. When a rule triggers an alarm, the detail camera links to the corresponding position and tracks the object until it goes out of the detection range or reaches the set tracking time (manual page 233). The detail camera is described in the manual as the subordinate camera viewing detailed images, while the panoramic camera is the main camera viewing panoramic images.

Calibration is the foundation. The manual states that main and sub calibration types include manual calibration and automatic calibration (manual page 243). Manual calibration asks you to select the same point in the panoramic camera channel and the detail camera channel; it is the right choice when there are multiple obvious static marks in the monitoring environment, and it also suits cases where you have special requirements for the calibration result. Auto calibration has the camera select the calibration point through the algorithm, with high calibration speed and accuracy, and is described as applicable when conditions suit an automated approach.

After calibration, the linkage track settings decide what happens at the edges of coverage. In Linkage Track mode, when the target disappears from the panoramic camera's image range, the detail camera does not continue tracking. In Relay Tracking mode, the detail camera continues tracking after the target leaves the panorama (manual page 234). That single choice changes operator experience more than any other setting on this page.

Prerequisites and site checks

Before touching configuration, confirm the hardware pairing is a panorama plus a detail PTZ, both reachable from the same web session, and that the panoramic camera's smart rules are already producing alarms. Linkage depends on those alarms; a panorama that never triggers will never hand off.

Check the function support caveat: the manual notes that linkage track only supports tracking humans on select models (manual page 234). Do not promise vehicle tracking on this workflow unless your specific model documentation confirms it. Similarly, whether the panorama channel and detail channel appear together in one device web interface or as separate devices depends on model/firmware.

Site conditions matter for calibration quality. Manual calibration relies on obvious static marks in the monitoring environment, so a scene with poles, corners, signage or fixed furniture calibrates more reliably than an empty lot. Confirm the PTZ has clear line of sight to the area the panorama covers, and that its preset positions (if you plan to use them) are already stored.

  • Panoramic and detail cameras installed, powered and on the network.
  • Smart rules on the panoramic camera tested and firing.
  • Static reference marks visible in both views for manual calibration.
  • PTZ presets defined if you intend to use Preset as the idle position.
  • Firmware version recorded, since menu layout and supported tracking targets vary.

Step-by-step configuration

The documented procedure for linkage track is short. Follow it in order, and do calibration first if you have not already done so, because the manual introduces linkage track as the behaviour that follows main and sub calibration (manual pages 233–234).

Step 1. Select AI > Panoramic Linkage > Linkage Track.
Step 2. Click beside Enable to enable linkage track. Note two constraints from the manual: only when linkage track is enabled can manual position and manual linkage take effect, and the function only supports tracking humans on select models (manual page 234).
Step 3. Select the tracking mode — Linkage Track or Relay Tracking, as described above.
Step 4. Configure the parameters in the table below.
Step 5. Click OK.

Calibration sits alongside this. Under main/sub calibration, choose manual or automatic calibration per the guidance on manual page 243, then complete the point selection or let the algorithm run. If your firmware presents calibration in a different sub-menu, the path depends on model/firmware — the parameter names and behaviour are the stable part.

Parameter What it does (per manual) Practical starting point
Time Limit for Tracking Enables a tracking duration configurable from 5 to 30 seconds. Start mid-range and shorten if the PTZ lingers on empty ground after a target passes.
New Target Priority When enabled, a newly detected target is prioritised for linkage; minimum tracking duration configurable from 5 to 30 seconds. Enable in busy scenes where the first target is less interesting than later arrivals.
Tracking Target Size Ratio Sets the proportion of the tracked object in the detail camera's image. Tune so the subject fills enough frame for identification without the PTZ over-zooming and losing the target.
Idle Position None: stays at the last tracked location. Default: returns to the forward position. Preset: returns to a configured preset. Use Preset for guard-tour style deployments; Default for simple forward-facing coverage.

Tuning and verification

Verification is behavioural, not cosmetic. Walk a test subject through the panorama's detection area and watch the detail camera acquire, follow, and release. Repeat at the edges of the panorama coverage, because that is where Linkage Track and Relay Tracking diverge. If you selected Relay Tracking, confirm the PTZ keeps tracking after the subject leaves the panorama; if you selected Linkage Track, confirm it stops.

Idle position is the second thing to verify. With None, the detail camera stops moving and remains fixed at the last tracked location after the linkage track ends. With Default, it returns to the forward position. With Preset, it returns to the corresponding preset (manual page 244). Watch a full cycle — trigger, track, release, return — and confirm the resting state is where your operators expect the PTZ to be.

For busy entrances, enable New Target Priority and set the minimum tracking duration so the PTZ does not thrash between subjects. For long perimeters, a longer Time Limit for Tracking keeps the detail camera engaged while the subject is still inside the panorama. Adjust one parameter at a time and re-test.

Symptom Likely cause What to check
PTZ never moves on alarm Linkage track disabled, or calibration incomplete Confirm Enable is set; re-run main/sub calibration.
PTZ aims at the wrong area Poor calibration point selection Switch to manual calibration using obvious static marks.
Tracking stops at panorama edge Linkage Track mode selected Change to Relay Tracking if continued tracking is required.
PTZ parks in an unexpected place Idle Position setting Review None / Default / Preset selection and stored presets.
No tracking of a vehicle Human-only support on select models Confirm target support for your model in its own documentation.

Buying notes and deployment fit

Specify the panorama and the PTZ as a pair. The value of the workflow is the handoff, so a detail camera with weak low-light performance or a slow zoom undermines a good panorama. Buyers should confirm human tracking support on the chosen models, since the manual explicitly limits linkage track to humans on select models (manual page 234).

For sites where operators need close-ups of people at entrances, walkways and gates, this pairing reduces manual PTZ driving. For wide perimeters, Relay Tracking is the more natural fit because the detail camera keeps working after the subject leaves the panorama. For simple forward-facing coverage, Default idle position keeps the PTZ predictable.

Browse the PTZ camera range for detail cameras, pair them with recording hardware from the network recorder collection, and check the WizMind collection where AI capability is the deciding factor. Confirm interoperability requirements against the ONVIF specification if you are mixing vendors, and check model documentation at Dahua Security.

FAQ

Do I need calibration before enabling linkage track? Yes. The manual introduces linkage track as the behaviour that follows main and sub calibration, and without calibration the detail camera has no mapping to the panorama.

What is the difference between Linkage Track and Relay Tracking? In Linkage Track the detail camera stops when the target leaves the panorama; in Relay Tracking it continues tracking (manual page 234).

Can the PTZ track vehicles? The manual states linkage track only supports tracking humans on select models. Vehicle support depends on model/firmware and must be confirmed in that model's documentation.

What happens when tracking ends? It depends on Idle Position: None leaves the PTZ at the last tracked location, Default returns it to the forward position, and Preset returns it to the configured preset (manual page 244).

What range can I set for tracking time? The Time Limit for Tracking duration is configurable from 5 to 30 seconds, and the New Target Priority minimum tracking duration uses the same 5 to 30 second range (manual page 244).

Does enabling linkage track affect manual control? The manual notes that only when linkage track is enabled can manual position and manual linkage take effect (manual page 234).
