THE BUYING GUIDE

Upgrade the recorder. Keep the system in view.

HDCVI recorders connect compatible coaxial cameras to a recording and playback system. Some models also support IP channels or additional signal formats, but combinations and limits vary. Compare the exact input configuration, encoding capability and HDD support before deciding how an existing installation can grow.

Start with the application.

Describe the job, the installation environment and the equipment already on site. Compare the exact model specifications before choosing; a collection name alone does not establish compatibility or included features.

Four checks before you choose.

Start with the details that affect your installation.

01 / INPUTS

Camera formats & channels

Check each supported signal format and its channel limits. Confirm how adding IP cameras affects the permitted configuration.

02 / RECORDING

Resolution & frame rate

Compare the actual encoding specifications, not only the maximum camera input resolution.

03 / STORAGE

HDD support & retention

Confirm bay count, allowed drive capacity and recording bitrate. Use the recording schedule to estimate storage.

04 / PLAYBACK

Viewing & export

Check decoding, display outputs and the process for finding and exporting required footage.

PLAN YOUR RECORDING TIME

How much storage
will you need?

Start with an estimate, then check the recorder’s drive limits and your site’s actual video settings.

ESTIMATED VIDEO STORAGE4.84 TB

Video only, in decimal TB. Allow extra capacity for formatting, audio and any RAID configuration. Variable bitrate and event recording change actual retention. This estimate does not determine which drives an NVR supports.

Talk through your requirements with us ↗

Can a recorder accept both coax and IP cameras?

Only if the exact model supports the required combination. Check channel allocation and resolution limits.

Does the highest input resolution equal the recording resolution?

Not necessarily. Check the encoding resolution and frame rate for the intended channel configuration.

Are hard drives included?

Confirm the offered configuration separately from supported HDD bay and capacity specifications.

Can I keep the existing cameras?

Compare each camera output format with recorder support and check the condition of the cabling and power supply.
